KYUK / Alaska Public Radio Network: The Bethel City Council on Tuesday voted to ban stores from handing out non-biodegradable plastic shopping bags and restaurants from using foam food takeout containers. The ban takes effect in September 2010; debate over the proposed ban had been going on for years. Harry Morgan of Aniak, a village that has already banned plastic shopping bags, says Bethel and the surrounding landscape will be cleaner as a result of the vote: "There's so much plastic bags, you fly out there, you see them all over."
