Spider Surge

Spiders gathered in unusual clusters at a field east of the Huffman post office recently, and apparently spread silky thread over fireweed and other plants. Fairbanks spider expert Brandi Fleshman, a Master's degree student, says it might have been a mass attempt to disperse themselves to a new location, a process called ballooning. Maybe conditions there were not good at that spot for wintering over, she says. She does not know of any Alaska spiders that are known to interact with each other under normal conditions.
