The Tundra Drums: The federal stimulus money designed to put the national economy on its feet will help some Alaska villages get tap water and flush toilets for the first time. Some $42 million will be spent in rural Alaska, where thousands of villagers still dump human waste in sewage lagoons or melt snow and ice for water. Sally Martin of Goodnews Bay is among villagers who are thrilled about the money. She keeps a honey bucket in her house and gets water at the washeteria in 5-gallon buckets, hauling it home daily on a four-wheeler. "We've been waiting forever," she said.
