PHOENIX -- Authorities say an Alaska teen who had gone into respiratory arrest while on a hike at Phoenix's South Mountain Preserve has been taken to an area hospital.
Capt. Alex Rangel, a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman, said Sunday that the 14-year-old and his family had been hiking for more than four hours when the teen began to act confused and wander off. Family members called for help at about 11:30 a.m., Rangel said, and about 30 minutes later, firefighters found the teen dehydrated and unable to breathe on his own.
Rangel also says the family had run out of water during the hike.
