Deadline nears for disaster assistance

For some workers affected by spring flooding in Alaska, the deadline to apply for disaster unemployment assistance is Thursday. The financial aid is available to people, including self-employed workers, who became unemployed as a direct result of the flooding, said Bill Kramer, chief of unemployment insurance for the state Department of Labor.

Those in the following villages have until Aug. 8 to apply: Akiak, Akiachak, Tuluksak, Emmonak, Russian, Mission, Kotlik and Alakanuk.

The benefit amount can range from $102 to $370 per week, plus $24 each for up to three dependents. But it is not payable to those who qualify for regular unemployment insurance benefits.

First National Bank reports pinched profit

First National Bank Alaska reported second quarter profits of $10.1 million, down 12 percent from the same three months of last year.

This year's profits are pinched by the bank setting aside more money to guard against loans that could go bad, said Jason Roth, chief financial officer. Further, last year the company had significant gains related to owning shares of Visa and MasterCard, gains that didn't recur this year.

For the first six months of this year, First National profits reached $19.6 million, down 18 percent. First National is based in Anchorage and has branches in 18 Alaska communities. It has assets of about $2.4 billion, with about half of those assets in the form of loans to customers.

Corps awards contract for dredging at port

The Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $23.5 million contract to Manson Construction to dredge virgin material in front of the new dock facilities at the Port of Anchorage. The dredging starts now and must be completed by Nov. 1, 2011, the Corps said.

Manson will excavate an estimated 1.9 million cubic yards of materials never dredged before, including boulders and other obstructions along a north and south dock extension and two new barge facilities associated with the port expansion. The dock area will be dredged to 35 feet below mean lower low water, and the barge facilities will be dredged to 25 and 35 feet.

The funding is part of $49.7 million of federal economic stimulus money directed to the Corps office in Alaska, the Corps said.
