Amanda Coyne, The Guardian, U.K.: Coyne, co-founder of alaskadispatch.com and a writing teacher at Alaska Pacific University, has penned a piece for a U.K. audience that puts Sarah Palin among past Alaska dreamers and schemers who ultimately lost their way or met immovable obstacles and fled the state. "Since I've lived here, I've met a lot of people who left Alaska for all sorts of reasons: the long winters and rough people, the lack of glowing little corner wine bars and general civility," Coyne writes. "And although they may be leaving for all sorts of exciting futures, I've rarely seen anybody leave triumphant."
Palin's "big dreams" were dashed by her rise to national awareness in the presidential campaign, Coyne writes. "She said she wanted to unite us, to drive a wedge through a Republican Party here that was notorious for its nepotism and shady deal-making. She wanted to usher in the Alaska gas line. ... She wanted to show us that politics could be done with a smile, and she did so for a while. ... We were proud of her."
