The New York Times: The makers of the Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds film "The Proposal" couldn't afford to shoot in Alaska, so they needed to find a house in Massachusetts that might look like it could be in Sitka, where much of the story is set. "The script said it should feel like something out of Alaskan Architectural Digest," said production designer Nelson Coates. "I was laughing when I read that. What is Alaskan Architectural Digest?" They decided on the Kaneb family home in Manchester-by-the-Sea, and then set about to make it "Alaskan." The bright interior wasn't rustic enough, so an interior set was built. And then they had to figure out what to do with the swimming pool.
