The Arctic Sounder: The new Kuskokwim River Watershed Council will hold its first "summit" Thursday and Friday in the village of Aniak. The organization, also based in Aniak, says it is the only group focused exclusively on environmental issues along the 750-mile-long Kuskokwim, the longest U.S. river without a dam. At least 23 tribal government representatives are expected at the meeting. "If the villages want us to focus on specific subsistence species, we will," says the council director. "If they want us to focus on mining, we will. If they want us to focus on environmental education, we will."
