Juneau a top 'no child left inside' city

(08/06/09 08:52:55)

CBS News, Backpacker: Juneau, surrounded by millions of acres of wilderness and without a land link to the North American road network, is among the top U.S. cities for raising kids who don't have "nature-deficit disorder," Backpacker magazine reports in its August edition. The magazine rates Juneau fifth in the nation among cities where outdoor recreation can help kids avoid obesity, diabetes and ADD. Boulder, Colo., topped the list, followed by Jackson, Wyo., Durango, Colo., and Flagstaff, Ariz. Backpacker editor Jonathan Dorn was interviewed today on CBS' "Early Show"; catch the video here. Among factors contributing to Juneau's ranking, Dorn said, are the rate of Boy Scout membership -- highest in the West -- the city's good education system, and a financially attractive climate for families because of Alaska's low taxes and Permanent Fund dividends.
