Homer tackles development chaos on the Spit

(08/20/09 08:52:19)

Link: Homer News On the Spit, many potentially conflicting uses are side by side. Million-dollar luxury condos are next to fuel tanks -- and both block the view of Poot Peak and the mountains across the bay. Halibut, crab, salmon and cod fishing boats share the harbor with recreational skiffs. Tourists fish off the same beach where Alaskans put in personal-use set nets. One of the bigger issues raised is a perennial problem: traffic congestion and parking. "The question is, how do we encourage development without sacrificing the things that make the Spit a unique and special place?" said Patrick Coleman of USKH, an Anchorage planning firm. Last week, USKH and the city of Homer held an open house and workshop at Land's End Resort to get public input on the proposed Homer Spit Comprehensive Plan.
