Colony and Kenai held onto the top spots in the state high school football rankings, marking the first time this season a large-school team has survived more than a week atop the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network's weekly poll.

Colony, a 46-0 winner over Lathrop last weekend, is the large-school team to beat for the second week in a row. The Knights will take the No. 1 ranking into a Friday home game against Soldotna, the No. 3 team among small schools.

Colony avoided the jinx that came with the No. 1 ranking for preseason favorite North Pole, which lost to Colony 17-7 in its season opener. Bartlett replaced the Patriots as the No. 1 team and promptly lost to South.

Also maintaining their spots in the large-school poll are No. 2 Service and No. 4 Palmer. New teams grabbed the No. 3 and No. 5 spots -- West, tied for fifth with Chugiak last week, jumped to No. 3 after beating the Mustangs 37-21; and South, unranked last week, is ranked fifth thanks to a 27-7 win over Dimond.

Bounced from the rankings were Juneau-Douglas, ranked third going into a game last week in St. George, Utah, where the Crimson Bears suffered their first loss of the season. Chugiak also fell out of the rankings.

In the small-school rankings, Kenai held onto the top spot by rolling past Nikiski 41-0.

The only change in the small-school poll was the emergence of a new No. 5. Monroe replaced Sitka by virtue of last week's 27-26 overtime victory over the visiting Wolves.
