Bar association rates court hopefuls

Of the 25 people who originally applied for an Alaska Supreme Court seat soon to be vacated, 19 remain in the race and have been rated in a survey of the state bar association, the Alaska Judicial Council said Monday. The vacancy on the five-member high court is due to the impending retirement of Justice Robert Eastaugh.

The Alaska Bar Association rating is only one tool used by the council to evaluate applicants, said Larry Cohn, council executive director. Others include experience, professional references, disciplinary background, credit history, community activities, writing ability, public comment and a review of court cases in which the applicant has been involved.
