Grumelot pedals to mountain bike title

Grumelot powered his way to a healthy victory in the 24-mile cross country race that capped the Arctic Bicycle Club's annual state championship series.

The victory, combined with Ross's misfortune, gave Grumelot the overall state championship.

Grumelot also won Saturday's eight-mile time trial to go along with a third-place finish in Saturday's criterium and a fourth-place finish in Friday's hill climb.

But it was Ross -- who claimed second place in the hill climb, criterium and time trial -- who owned the overall lead going into Sunday's cross country race.

He was unable to finish though, foiled by a flat tire, a broken seat and a missing brake bolt.

Grumelot dominated the men's expert race in 1 hour, 53 minutes, 48 seconds, beating Brent Gorman by more than three minutes. A day earlier, Grumelot won the time trial in 36:38, beating Ross by 17 seconds.

With Sunday's victory, Grumelot matched the number of wins tallied over the weekend by James Stull.

After winning Friday's hill climb, Stull pulled away from Ross on the final lap of Saturday's 12-lap short-track dirt criterium. He conquered 12 miles of hilly, rain-soaked trail to win in 37 minutes.

In the two other races, Stull placed third in the cross-country race and fifth in the time trial.

Other overall championships went to Parker Quimby in the men's sport division, Mike Howard in the men's master division, Sheryl Loan in the women's expert division, Petra Davis in the women's sport division and Alex Loan in the junior division.
