Valley lakes ++++
Trout, grayling, arctic char, pike
Fish are more active in shallow water. Fish and Game calls it a "great time to dust off the float tube." Want to fish several lakes in a day? Try Loberg, Meirs, Echo, Matanuska, Canoe and Irene. Get out of the state fair traffic and cast a line at Klaire or Victor lake.
Willow area lakes ++++
Trout, grayling, pike
Take a four-wheeler into Wishbone or Ruby lakes for big rainbows.
Willow Creek +++
Silver salmon, trout
Silvers continue to show. Remember, rainbow trout caught downstream of Parks Highway must be released.
Sheep Creek +++
Silver salmon, trout
Water may be a little muddy, but that shouldn't hurt the bite.
Montana Creek +++
Silver salmon, trout, grayling
Last weekend of the year for Montana Creek Campground, and silver salmon are still available. Remember, it's catch and release for grayling and rainbows.
Little Susitna River ++
Silver, chum salmon, rainbows
Does the Little Su have one more burst of silver salmon coming? Just 3,854 silvers are past the weir on a stream that has averaged nearly 16,000 over the last four years. Last year, there were three different shots of more than 1,000 fish moving past the weir in one day after Sept. 3.
Wasilla, Cottonwood creeks +++
Silver salmon, trout
The Saturday-Sunday-Monday-only 6 a.m.-6 p.m. fishery has been productive. Wasilla (Rabbit Slough) Creek is open to motorized watercraft. Bag limit up to three fish.
Jim Creek +++
Silver, red salmon
Bag limit up to three fish, and silver fishing continues to be good for early risers. Wildlife enforcement officers have nabbed plenty of violators here.
Eklutna Tailrace ++
Silver salmon
Run seems to be tailing off, but the occasional chromer is still available.
Fish Creek +++
Silver salmon
The Saturday-Sunday-Monday 6 a.m.-6 p.m. fishery has been a Mat-Su silver salmon bright spot with a three-fish limit. Legal area extends from the mouth of Fish Creek to regulatory signs posted a quarter mile above Knik-Goose Bay Road. Blast of nearly 1,000 silvers shot past the weir on Saturday, but by Tuesday 26 swam past. Season total of 5,314 is well above the Little Su's so far.
REMOTE FISHERIES
Deshka River +
Silver salmon, trout, grayling
Silver run appears done. Just 16 past the weir on Tuesday. Still, this year's return of 27,000 fish is more than double what the Deshka saw the last two years.
Lake Creek +++
Silver salmon, rainbows
Silver salmon and rainbow trout should provide good fishing this weekend.
Talkeetna River ++++
Silver, chum salmon, rainbows, grayling
Continued good silver salmon fishing at Clear Creek and in slow-water spots on the main stem of the Talkeetna.
ANCHORAGE AREA
Campbell Creek ++
Silver salmon
Fair fishing for silvers using bright red corkies, but creek seems on the decline. Open from Dimond Boulevard to a marker downstream of C Street. Closed to king and red salmon fishing. Any rainbows caught must be released. No bait; artificial lures only.
Bird Creek ++
Pink, silver, chum salmon
Tougher to locate fresh silvers among dozens of decaying pinks, but persistent anglers still finding success. Either side of high tide works best. Vibrax and Pixee lures in pink, orange, chartreuse and blue are popular. Cured fish roe drifted near the bottom below a bobber on a No. 2 hook. Better bet may be Twentymile River or other streams at the head of Turnagain Arm.
Local lakes +++
Trout, graying, char, pike, salmon
Lower temperatures are making trout, grayling and char more active and you can't beat the backdrop this time of year. Little Campbell Lake has a few big fish roaming.
Ship Creek +
Silver, pink salmon
Silver salmon prospects have slowed. Where schools of fish were entering the creek a week ago, only random fish are entering the creek now. Eggs under a bobber can work. Try a No. 2 hook and cinch your bait securely to the shank with an egg loop. Pink and orange spinners are popular too.
KENAI PENINSULA
Deep Creek ++
Silver, pink salmon, Dollies
Single hook, no bait regulations in effect. High tide can bring good silver salmon fishing. Dolly Varden are a great alternative this time of year. Beware, the steelhead run has begun and these exceptional game fish must be released. Know your species before you cast.
Ninilchik River ++
Silvers, Dollies, steelhead
Single hook, no bait regulations in effect. Silver fishing has been ho-hum of late. Rainbows and steelhead cannot be removed from water and must be released.
Russian River ++
Rainbows, silver salmon, Dollies
Russian gets a small silver run with a limit of one silver in the Russian and the sanctuary area. Rainbows are available upriver and they're gorging on fish eggs. Best of all, the river is empty -- and beautiful.
Homer Spit +
Silver salmon, Dollies
Silver fishing still slow at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon. Limit is six fish. Cured salmon eggs below a bobber sometimes works. Snagging is illegal.
Anchor River ++
Dollies, silver, pink salmon, steelhead
Single hook, no bait regulations in effect. A few silvers should be available past Labor Day, but the run is looking dismal. Only 1,528 silvers have been counted upstream, with a dozen on Tuesday -- this on a river that's had an average return of more than 10,800 fish over the past four years. Your three-salmon limit can include two silvers. Steelhead are entering the river and must be immediately released.
Kasilof River ++
Silver, red salmon, Dollies
Guide Eric Loomis said the bait closure has reduced fishing pressure here, but the silver run is "just getting started and I think it'll pop soon." Typically runs well into September.
Upper Kenai River ++++
Rainbows, Dollies, silvers
Rainbow fishing has been good to excellent. Silvers available too.
Lower Kenai River ++++
Silver, red salmon
Silver fishing good to excellent all the way up to Skilak Lake. Two per day is the bag and possession limit this month. Drift egg clusters near the bank, where the fish tend to congregate when the water is high and fast.
Clam Gulch +
Razor clams
No good clamming tides until mid-month. Limit is the first 60 clams you dig.
MARINE FISHERIES
Outside Resurrection Bay +++
Halibut, rockfish, silver salmon
Almost three months after they first showed, fresh silvers still available outside the bay. Anglers near Hive Island have fared well. Big halibut remain available and the limit is two per day. Lingcod fishing is good and the rockfish (limit four per day) are always available. Beware, it's illegal to use rockfish as lingcod bait.
Resurrection Bay +
Silver, king salmon, halibut, rockfish
Silvers are scattered throughout the bay, with action typically slow. Shore-based anglers casting from South Beach at Lowell Point should be the first to score.
Deep Creek offshore +++
Silver, king salmon, halibut
Two-fish halibut limits are common, with fish usually 15-25 pounds. Silver anglers having some success near Flat Island. Trollers targeting "feeder" king salmon throughout the late fall. Popular trolling tackle includes herring, hoochies, tube flies and spoons. Try using dodgers or flashers for extra attraction.
Prince William Sound ++++
Silver, pink salmon, halibut, shrimp
Spotty silver salmon angling around Whittier, but some anglers have scored. The Valdez silver and halibut derbies end Sunday and silver fishing can be hot -- though the fish have taken a while to get within close range. Now lots of anglers are limiting out in half a day. Halibut fishing is tapering off.
Kachemak Bay +++
King, silver salmon, halibut, rockfish
Silver action isn't hot, but it is fairly consistent. Watch for birds and try trolling from bait ball to bait ball at depths of 30-50 feet. Most fish in 8-10 pound range, but some monsters mixed in too. This is the last month of the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby, which a local angler leads with a 355-pounder. Daily limit is two halibut.
