September 4, 2009

FORT WAINWRIGHT -- The death of an Alaska-based soldier found dead in his Fort Wainwright barracks room this week is under investigation, Army officials said Friday.

Spc. James T. Townsend, 31, from Blaine, Wash., was discovered dead by his squad leader late Wednesday afternoon, the Army said. He had just returned from a 12-month deployment to Iraq on Aug. 29.

Townsend was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright.

Townsend joined the Army in October 2005 and arrived at Fort Wainwright in April 2006.

Army officials said the cause of Townsend's death was unknown and was being investigated by the U. S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
