Homeless advocates push for changes to ordinance on camps

A group concerned about Anchorage's homeless took a close look Wednesday at the new municipal ordinance giving police power to shut down illegal camps. So far, the measure -- which allows police to clear out homeless camps with 12 hours notice -- is working as intended, acting police chief Steve Smith told the Assembly public safety committee. He didn't know how many camps had been targeted since the Assembly approved the ordinance July 7.

But some Assembly members are worried about what will happen to the homeless, and the American Civil Liberties Union is concerned that people's rights could be violated.

At the table during the hour-long session were representatives from the police department, the ACLU, homeless shelters, homeless advocacy groups, soup kitchens, and the Anchorage Responsible Beverage Retailers Association, which cleans up the camps after police post a notice to leave.

Assembly member Mike Gutierrez, chair of the public safety committee, said the panel will keep working on the issue, likely through a working group being proposed by Mayor Dan Sullivan.
