Link: Valdez Star "Some people said it smelled like overwhelming flatulence. Others thought it was like rotten eggs or propane." The Star reports that a hideous odor wafted through the town one day last week, stumping just about everybody. "It was really awful," said Peggy Perales of the National Weather Service. "I thought we had a gas leak but there's no gas in the building. ... It smelled like someone left a very large tank of propane open." The odor was eventually traced to fish guts discharged by the Peter Pan Seafoods plant into the bay and exposed by a low tide. "It was just a burp from Peter Pan," said Mayor Bert Cottle. But plant manager Gary Johnson doesn't agree with that conclusion -- and he says he didn't smell a thing.
