Homer 'boat museum' owners had big plans for Spit property

Link: Homer Tribune The owners of a "boat museum" on the Homer Spit that looks suspiciously like a maritime junkyard have been asked to spiff up their three acres by getting rid of about 100,000 pounds of scrap metal. True, some of the derelict boats are real antiques. The Cousins family property on the Spit is most easily identified by the presence of their three-story houseboat that used to be a World War II troop carrier. Bob Cousins, who with his family now lives mostly in Maine, describes a litany of conflicts over land use with the state and city but says he's trying to cooperate with a new, more understanding city administration. Still, he says, the Spit is not the place for Disney-style tourist development. "[Tourists] don't come here to see a place that looks more like Miami. They don't come here to see condos off the end of the Spit or neatly stacked fishing equipment. They come here to see the survival business of real fishermen."
