Proposed road to Nome narrowed to 2 routes

(09/16/09 11:31:24)

Link: KUAC via APRN The state has narrowed to two its options for a road to Nome. A 440-mile northern route starting in Bettles would most benefit mining development, while a 500-mile Yukon River route starting in Nenana or Manley would most benefit villages. Estimated cost: $3 billion to $5 billion. The Yukon route has more challenging terrain and would be more expensive, said Department of Transportation northern region planning director Jerry Rafson. Either way, due to the cost, the road would have to be completed in stages over many years, he said.
