The highly popular ski train has for years been a signature event of the association. For 37 years, the train has carried skiers into the remote backcountry of Grandview, south of Anchorage, or Curry, to the north.
Ticket sales for the ski train, which typically sell out swiftly, were due to go on sale Oct. 1.
NSAA had geared up its sales effort just before the cancellation was announced, and tickets had been printed.
The association said it would work with the railroad to "revive the ski train in future years as the Alaska economy rebounds."
