Cancer claims mayor of Anaktuvuk Pass

Link: Fairbanks Daily News-Miner Mayor George Paneak of Anaktuvuk Pass, who grew up in a sod hut in the Brooks Range and who in recent years championed environmentally sustainable construction in rural Alaska, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 60. His father, Simon, was the founder of Anaktuvuk Pass and led Nunamiut Inupiat Eskimos in ending their nomadic lifestyle. George Paneak recently remarked on how "easy" life in the Bush had become.
