Tailings and other debris from the Salt Chuck Mine on Prince of Wales Island, north of Ketchikan, are strewn among dilapidated buildings from the mine, which operated from the early 1900s to the 1940s. The Environmental Protection Agency is recommending the mine be added to the list of the nation's most contaminated sites. Children sometimes play in the area.
