Fishing boat grounded off Alaska Peninsula; crew rescued

KODIAK - Three people have been picked up by a Good Samaritan vessel after their ship went aground.Kodiak radio station KMXT reports the 83-foot Unimak is on the rocks near Chignik, on the Alaska Peninsula 200 miles southwest of Kodiak Island.

The crew reportedly abandoned the wooden-hulled fishing vessel and were picked up by the crew of the passing Sylvia Star.

The Coast Guard will conduct a flight over the Unimak this afternoon.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Sara Francis says the skipper of the Unimak will also survey his grounded ship from the Sylvia Star.

Weather officials have issued a gale warning for coastal waters south of the Alaska Peninsula. West winds are gusting more than 60 mph with seas at 14 feet.
