Most of the damage at a three-story complex at 14004 Old Glenn Highway was limited to a single apartment, according to the Red Cross. But the power and other utilities have been cut off at the building, forcing tenants to evacuate.
The fire was first reported at about 11 p.m. and started in the furnace room, said Bruce Bartley, spokesman for the Chugiak Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company.
"Something went wrong with the electrical feed into the building," Bartley said.
The Red Cross helped six families find shelter. Other tenants are staying with friends and family.
"It may take one or two additional days before the power is restored," said Red Cross spokeswoman Kelly Hurd. The agency is working with the landlord to make sure people have a place to stay and can get necessities out of their apartments, she said.
Bartley said. "There was neither electricity nor heat. Then in the process of tearing things open, we broke a water line, so we ended up shutting the water off too."
Firefighters report no serious injuries.
