The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce presented John Shively with its 2009 William A. Egan Award as the outstanding Alaskan of the year, an award the chamber gives annually to someone from the private sector who has made substantial and continual contributions of statewide significance.
Shively has had a long career in the private and public sectors. He is chief executive of the Pebble Partnership, which is hoping to develop the huge Pebble copper and gold prospect in Southwest Alaska. Before that he was a vice president with Holland America Line, one of the biggest tourism companies in Alaska. He also has worked for NANA Development Corp., was a chief of staff to Gov. Bill Sheffield in the early 1980s, state commissioner of Natural Resources in the 1990s, and a board member of the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp. In addition, Shively has served on the boards of a variety of civic and trade groups.
Credit union opens new branch at retailer
Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union has opened a full-service branch in the Walmart store at 8900 Old Seward Highway. The branch has an ATM and offers deposit and loan services from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, Denali said. Stephanie Sherman is the retail sales branch manager; she most recently held the same job at Denali's branch in the Eagle River Walmart store. Anchorage-based Denali has 58,000 members, $492 million in assets and 17 branches in Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla, Fairbanks and Juneau.
