West leads CIC tennis tourney

With one exception, the first two rounds went according to seed at the Cook Inlet Conference tennis tournament on Friday.

Service's Jordan Smelker turned in the lone upset in the girls singles tournament, rallying to knock off No. 4 seed Kelly Tomera of West. Smelker lost the first set before rebounding to earn a 6-2, 7-5, 7-5 victory, advancing to face No. 1 seed Emma Lewis of South in the semifinals.

West held a narrow lead in the team standings after the opening day of play at The Alaska Club North.

With each match win worth a point, the Eagles had 12 points after Day 1. Dimond and South were close behind with 10 wins each and East sat in third with nine victories.

The other girls semifinal today features West's Tabtip Louhabanjong, the No. 2 seed, against No. 3 seed Sophie Frost of South. Louhabanjong advanced through the first two rounds without losing a game while Frost dropped two games in her two wins.

The top four seeds advanced with ease through the first two rounds of boys singles on Friday at The Alaska Club North.

Top-seeded Rendell Burghardt of Dimond and No. 3 seed Jacob Oberg of Service, each won both of their matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores and face each other in one semifinal today at 11:30 a.m. No. 2 seed David Cotton of West dropped a total of four games in beating his first two opponents while No. 4 seed Kyle Cox of East overcame a small scare in the first round to advance. Cox beat Derek Noland of Service 6-0, 7-5 then won 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Cox and Cotton meet today at noon in the second boys semifinal match.

The top seeds all advanced through to the semifinals in the girls, boys and mixed doubles draws.

Play continues today with the first semifinals taking place at 9 a.m. and championship matches set for 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
