Alaska town's land giveaway mostly a flop

Link: Fairbanks Daily News-Miner Apparently, the deal was too good to be true for most of the 26 parties who in 2007 put down $500 deposits on lots being given away by the Parks Highway community of Anderson southwest of Fairbanks. The city will probably have to foreclose on 18 lots that were never developed (claimants were to get their $500 returned after they built a home on the lot). Only three houses were built, and a bed-and-breakfast is on the way. “I think there were people who wanted to relocate but didn’t realize the logistics of building out in the country,” Mayor Keith Fetzer said. “They had this dream -- ‘Oh my God, I’m getting free land.’ ”
