PALMER -- Both a proposed sales tax/property tax cap proposition and a $31.7 million school repair were headed for defeat in Tuesday's voting in the Mat-Su Borough.

According to the borough, 1,423 absentee ballots were also left to be counted, as were 513 questioned ballots and 21 special-needs ballots. Those will be counted later this month. The borough clerk's office said results should be finalized on Oct. 20.

The sales tax proposal lost by a wide margin. More than 9,400 voters cast ballots against the tax measure, and more than 2,800 voters supported it. The proposition was touted as a revenue-neutral tax that would have instituted a 3 percent sales tax in exchange for a 7.3 mill rate on property tax. Currently, borough residents pay 9.98 mills, plus road and fire service area taxes. The measure included a $20,000 rebate on residential property assessments and would have expired on June 30, 2014.

Proposition 2, a $31.7 million bond package for school district building renovations, also appeared to be failing, according to unofficial results. The bond package covered roof repairs, new fire alarm systems and new floors and parking lot improvements.

Incumbents were tossed out in voting for several positions, while on the school board incumbents largely kept their seats.
