The Seawolves volleyball team is ranked in the West Region for the first time in eight years and it played like it on the road Thursday.

Behind an incredible hitting display, UAA dispatched Seattle Pacific in stunning fashion 25-17, 25-20, 25-17, and moved into a first-place tie in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with the Falcons.

"The girls were fired up all day long, they really wanted to get out on the court," UAA coach Chris Green said by phone. "As coaches we didn't have to do much."

It was the first victory in 17 attempts for the Seawolves (14-7, 6-2 GNAC) at Royal Brougham Pavilion, and they won in style.

The Seawolves posted by far the best hitting performance in a league match this year, with a .375 attack percentage on the road against what was the conference's No. 1 team. The previous mark of .327 was set by UAF at home against last-place St. Martin's.

"We talk about putting everything together. Everyone and everything at high level, and we did that tonight," Green said.

Senior Callie Scott orchestrated the Seawolves' near-flawless attack with 31 assists, distributing the ball equally to her hitters. Sophomore Jackie Matthisen hammered 10 kills, sophomore McKenzie Moss and junior Cortney Lundberg each blasted nine, and freshman Marie Borowikow drilled seven.

Lundberg hit at a .571 percentage and had six blocks, Matthisen hit .391 and Borowikow hit .500.

The Seawolves had 39 kills on 88 attempts with six errors.

"All of our hitters were doing a good job and Callie did great. We passed very well, our serve receive was good and we served well," Green said.

The first NCAA Division II West Region poll of the season was released Thursday and the Seawolves are ranked seventh in the region. Seattle Pacific (12-8, 6-2 GNAC) is ranked sixth. The Seawolves have played five of the top six teams in the rankings with losses to No. 1 Cal State-San Bernardino, No. 2 UC San Diego and No. 4 Hawaii-Hilo, and wins over No. 5 Cal State-Los Angeles and No. 6 Seattle Pacific. All of the matches have been on the road or on neutral courts.

It is the first ranking for UAA since it finished 10th in the final poll of 2001. The rankings help determine the eight teams that qualify for the NCAA West Region tournament. The Seawolves' opponent Saturday, Northwest Nazarene (13-8, 6-3), is ranked ninth.
