Anchorage rowers earn bronze in Australia

Anchorage rowers John Clark, Ed Hall, Erin Bashaw and Dan Brokaw earned a bronze medal in the mixed quadruple scull last week at the World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia. The four Anchorage rowers were among more than three dozen Alaskans who competed in the World Masters Games, using the venues of the 2004 Summer Games.

The bronze medalists finished in 3 minutes, 29.14 seconds in the eight-boat final.

"It was world-class racing on a world-class body of water," Hall said in an e-mail.

Rowers from the Anchorage Rowing Association, Kenai Crewsers Rowing Club and the Alaska Midnight Sun Rowing Club in Soldotna competed.

Men's D Single Scull -- Mike Chriss made it to the semifinals in a deep field of 74 scullers, placing seventh among eight in 4:10.31, his best time of the championships.

Women's C Single Sculls -- Julie Tuskowski missed advancing to the semifinals by .05 seconds in her first race outside Alaska, finishing fourth in her heat in 4:40.47.

Men's D Eight with Cox -- John Clark, Dan Brokaw, Mike Chriss, Richard Lazur, Kevin Hall, Scott Coon, Joe Bear, George Bryson with Natasha Graham as coxswain finished sixth of eight in their heat in 3:30.04.

Men's C Four with Cox -- Kevin Hall, Roger Liebner, Tom Swann, Harold Faust, with Natasha Graham were last in their heat in 4:00.98.

Women's D Four with Cox -- Janeece Higgins, Robby Bear, Sandra Rudd, Kate Swift with Natasha Graham were sixth of seven boats in their heat in 4:31.29.

Women's B Quadruple Scull -- Ed Hall, Erin Bashaw, Janet Curran, Julie Truskowski were fifth among seven boats in their heat, finishing in 3:52.11.

Women's C Four with Cox -- Shelly Andreesen, Anne Blount, Sue Sheard and Robby Bear, with Natasha Graham, were fourth of seven boats in their heat, finishing in 4:05:08.

Women's B Four -- The Alaska boat with Janet Curran, Emma Haddix, Shelly Andreesen and Anne Blount finished fourth among seven boats in 3:51.42; the second Alaska boat with Ed Hall, Anna Kohl, Erin Bashaw, Marcelle Young was one spot back in 3:54.56.

Women's B Four with Cox -- Anne Blount, Janet Curran, Sue Sheard and Shelley Andreesen, with Natasha Graham, won their heat in 3:56.37 and earned a spot in the finals, where they finished seventh among eight boats in 4:03.55.

Men's D Quadruple Scull -- Joe Bear, Dan Brokaw, John Clark, Mike Chriss earned a spot in the semifinals by finishing second in their heat in 3:32.94. Their semi time was faster, 3:29.64.

Men's D Quadruple Scull -- Harold Faust, Kevin Hall, Richard Lazur, George Bryson were fifth among six boats in 3:59.52.

Women's C Double Scull -- Julie Truskowski and Janet Curran finished second in their heat to advance to the semifinals, where they were seventh in 4:05.48.

Women's C Double Scull -- Robby Bear and Sue Sheard were last in their heat in 4:44.50.

Men's E Four with Cox -- Roger Liebner, Richard Lazur, Harold Faust and Tom Swann, with Natasha Graham, made it to the semifinals, finishing fifth among seven boats in 3:55.75.

Men's C Double Scull -- John Clark and Dan Brokaw advanced to the semifinals after a third-place finish in their heat. They wound up eighth of nine boats in 3:44.78.

Women's A Four -- Erin Bashaw, Sue Sheard, Marcelle Young and Shelley Andreesen were last in 3:58.44.

Women's D Four with Cox -- Natasha Graham, Sandra Rudd, Robby Bear, Kate Swift, with Janeece Higgins, were seventh of eight boats in 4:28.88.

Women's B Pair -- Anna Kohl and Ed Hall were sixth of seven boats in 4:09.09. Erin Bashaw and Marcelle Young were fifth of six boats in 4:24.44

Men's E Double -- Next-door neighbors Richard Lazur and Mike Chriss were second in 3:58.85 to advance to the semifinals, where they were last in 3:57.75.

Women's A Pair -- After finishing second in the heats and advancing to the finals, Ed Hall and Julie Truskowski finished fifth among eight boats in 4:15.46.

Men's B Quadruple Sculls: Joe Bear, Scott Coon, John Clark, Dan Brokaw were fourth of six boats in their heat, finishing in 3:39.40.

Women's D Single Scull -- Robby Bear was fifth of among seven rowers in 4:51.60.

Women's D Single Scull -- Kate Swift was last in 5:28.59.

Women's B Double Scull -- Erin Bashaw and Ed Hall were seventh among eight boats in 4:19.64.

Men's D Four with Cox -- Kevin Hall, George Bryson, Tom Swann and Harold Faust, with Becky Buchanan, were last in 3:59.21. Mike Chriss, Roger Liebner, Joe Bear and Richard Lazur, with Natasha Graham, were sixth of seven boats in 4:03.92.

Women's C Eight with Cox -- Janet Curran, Robby Bear, Janeece Higgins, Sue Sheard, Emma Haddix, Kate Swift, Sandra Rudd and Anne Blount, with Natasha Graham, were fourth among seven boats in 3:54.69.

Men's Single Scull -- Dan Brokaw was fourth of five boats in his heat. His 3:58.46 was fast enough to have won six of the 12 heats.

Women's E Eight with Cox -- Anchorage rowers Janeece Higgins and Kate Swift racing joined the Kenai Crewser team to place fourth among five boats in 4:12.48.

Women's C Quadruple Scull -- Janet Curran, Robby Bear, Erin Bashaw and Julie Truskowski were fourth among eight boats in their heat, finishing in 4:21.28.

Mixed Quadruple Scull -- John Clark, Ed Hall, Erin Bashaw and Dan Brokaw earned a bronze medal, finishing third among eight boats in the final in 3:29.14.

Mixed C Quadruple Scull -- Sue Sheard, Scott Coon, Robby Bear and Joe Bear were seventh among nine boats in their heat, finishing in 3:38.55.

Mixed D Quadruple Scull -- Janeece Higgins, Janet Curran, Kevin Hall and George Bryson were sixth among nine boats in their heat in 4:19.54.
