'Lost Aleutian Villages' trip goes back in time

Villagers were evacuated by the U.S. during World War II and weren't allowed to return after the war. The September trip was the first in the Park Service's Lost Aleutian Villages project to document settlements permanently left behind in the evacuations. Nick Galaktionoff of Unalaska had hoped to return to Makushin to look for a box he buried in his family home before he left the village. At the last minute, he was unable to go. Those who made the trip brought him back some soil and a nail as relics of the village. The Kashega portion of the trip had to be called off because of bad weather.
