Kohring was convicted in 2007 of bribery, conspiracy and attempted extortion related to an effort by then-Veco Corp. executives for a new oil tax scheme sought by the industry. But after his trial, prosecutors acknowledged they had not provided Kohring's defense with evidence that could have helped him. Prosecutors eventually turned over thousands of pages of additional materials.
With those materials in hand, Kohring had faced a Friday deadline to file court papers to dismiss the case or seek a new trial.
Sedwick's order says a new deadline will be set after Kohring gets another lawyer. The judge gave the former legislator until Nov. 6 to get a lawyer on his own or apply for a court-appointed one.
