Nobody seems to know, but the effects are well-known: The island's population of rhinocerous auklets was chased off by the big, egg-eating rodents. Now the auklets have returned in small numbers, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering a marmot eradication program on the island, which is in the Barren Islands group between the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island.
