Some aren't even completely ice-covered yet.
"Remember," said public information officer Ken Marsh, "catching a few early winter fish is not worth the risk."
Some Mat-Su lakes have 1-2 inches of ice; others have 3-4 inches.
Typically, at least 6 inches of ice is needed for ice to be safe for foot traffic -- and 18 inches for vehicles. Once ice is that thick, Marsh recommends taking a spud bar and frequently checking the ice thickness.
