US attorney drops illegal-fishing charge against village officer

Federal prosecutors say an illegal fishing citation against a police officer for the village of Marshall will be dismissed without any fine.

Jason Isaac was one of more than a dozen fishermen involved in the June 26 protest along the Yukon River near the village of 400. But he was the only one ticketed.

Area residents had complained they weren't getting enough king salmon to eat because of fishing restrictions by state and federal fishery managers.

The Ohogamuit tribal government worked with lawyers to challenge the $275 ticket, which had political implications in Western Alaska, where king salmon and other subsistence foods have long been staples of the diet.

The Tundra Drums reported the U.S. Attorney's office for Alaska said in an Oct. 21 letter to Isaac the citation will be dismissed.
