Firefighters began battling the blaze and had it under control in about 30 minutes. The most severe damage was in the room of origin -- a bedroom where the children sleep -- though the rest of the home sustained smoke damage, firefighters said.
Smoke detectors in the home were working and woke the people up allowing them time to escape, firefighters said. The dog died of smoke inhalation, according to firefighters.
The fire appears to have been caused by a space heater that ignited nearby materials, firefighters said.
