West's Alec Butcher scored midway through the third period to forge a tie with visiting West Valley at a nonconference hockey game at the McDonald Center. The Eagles trailed 2-1 entering the third, but managed to tie the game despite being outshot 13-3 in the period. For the game, West Valley had a 30-18 advantage in shots on goal.

3rd-period surge earns Wolves a tie

Eagle River scored three third-period goals, two of them power-play goals that came in the final 91 seconds, to earn a 3-3 tie with Service in Cook Inlet Conference hockey action at the McDonald Center in Eagle River. Ryan Ghan scored two of the goals for the Wolves, including the first power-play strike with 91 seconds left. Sixty-one seconds later — with 30 seconds left in regulation — Ben Russell scored to send the game to overtime.

No one scored in the extra eight minutes, with Eagle River goalie Kyle Haken turning back 11 shots and Service’s Cody Gongora stopping three. Haken finished with 32 saves and Gongora had 20 in a game where four of the six goals came on power plays.

Dimond takes crown

Dimond rocked North Pole on Saturday to claim the title of the Curtis C. Menard memorial tournament in Wasilla.

The Lynx held a 2-0 lead after the first period and then erupted for five scores in a span of 9 minutes and 30 seconds of the second period. Dimond led 8-0 before North Pole finally got on the board late in the third period.

Tyler Thompson, Aaron Dunlap and Casey Hill each had two goals for the Lynx, who improved to 3-0-1. Dunlap was named MVP of the eight-team tournament. Dimond 2 5 3 — 9
