Sally A. Chya, 36, and James A. Childers, 37, were struck at about 10 p.m. by a southbound 1995 Chevrolet. Both are from Wasilla. Both appear to have been drinking, troopers say.
Chya was pronounced dead at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. Childers underwent surgery for extensive injuries at the hospital and is expected to survive, according to troopers.
Troopers say they don't believe the driver of the car, 21-year-old Thomas E. Brass of Wasilla, had been drinking.
The collision came just south of Pittman Road in a roughly 10-mile stretch of highway designated as a safety corridor in 2006 because of the high number of fatal and injury-causing accidents.
Troopers said they had come into contact with Chya about 11 a.m. Wednesday during a domestic violence investigation in which Melvin Chya, 46, was accused of attacking a family member and trying to fight a third person at the Mile 49 Cabins in Wasilla.
Troopers wouldn't say how Sally Chya was involved.
