The Aces surrendered four more power-play goals in a hostile rink Friday night, falling 6-2 to the Bakersfield Condors at Rabobank Arena in California.
That's the most man-advantage strikes Alaska has allowed this season, although they have twice surrendered three power-play goals in an ECHL road match and given up two power-play goals in two other road games.
In those seven roadies, Aces opponents have scored 16 power-play goals on 52 opportunities for remarkable 30.8-percent efficiency. That makes Alaska's road penalty-killing percentage (69.2) the second-worst on the 20-team circuit. Only Toledo (65.8 percent) is lousier.
What makes that number so jaw-dropping is that in eight home games at Sullivan Arena, the Aces have permitted opponents two power-play strikes in 46 chances for penalty-killing efficiency of 95.7 percent.
In any event, Friday's match, the third of five straight against the Condors for the Aces, began with promise. Aces center Jason Ryznar, the former NHLer making his ECHL debut after missing the first 14 games of the season with a broken hand, scored three minutes into the game for a 1-0 Aces lead.
Bakersfield's Sasha Pokulok scored his seventh goal of the season seven minutes later to notch a 1-1 tie. Pokulok leads ECHL defensemen in goals and he scored on the power play later in the period, after Colin Hemingway's goal for Alaska, for a 2-2 tie through 20 minutes.
Hemingway, Alaska's leading scorer, has provided at least one point in 13 of 15 games.
Power-play goals by Eric Regan and Mathieu Aubin in the first eight minutes of the second period provided Bakersfield a 4-2 lead, and the Condors cruised from there. Shawn Weller unloaded another helping of special-teams ammunition on the Aces with a short-handed goal in the third period and Stephane Goulet closed the scoring with a power-play goal late.
Alaska (8-5-2) mustered a season-low 18 shots on goal while allowing Bakersfield (10-6-0) to unload 40 shots on Aces goaltender Sebastian Dahm.
The gaping final score gave the Condors some revenge after the Aces clubbed them 7-1 in Anchorage last Saturday.
The clubs meet again tonight and wrap up their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
