Fake identities lead to arrest of man, 71

A 71-year-old Kenai man has been indicted on 12 federal charges of passport fraud, identity theft and using a false Social Security number and identity to get Permanent Fund dividends, the U.S. attorney said. Richard Leo Hadsell was arrested Wednesday on the allegations, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Hadsell used at least four identities belonging to dead men and had four passports. He has obtained more than $30,000 in PFD payments under one false identity since 1985 and has used the fake identities to get Alaska driver's licenses and to open bank accounts, prosecutors said.

Hadsell is also wanted by Oregon authorities.

Hadsell is facing a maximum of 10 years in prison on the passport charge and five years on each of the false Social Security number counts, prosecutors said.
