The city is canceling five scheduled public swine-flu vaccination clinics for Anchorage residents and will instead give more vaccine to health care providers and pharmacies, which are going through their allocations quickly, city Health Department officials said Monday.

"We want to do our best to get vaccine where there is currently a demand for it," said Diane Ingle, city health director, in a written statement.

The Anchorage School District will begin vaccinating students in middle and high schools next week, and that will also require a significant supply of vaccine, Ingle said.

The city held its first public mass swine-flu vaccination clinic at UAA Saturday but turnout was less than expected. Fewer than 900 people got the vaccine, a city official said.

The swine-flu vaccine at this time is available only to people in identified priority groups.

The canceled clinics include one today at the Downtown Transit Center; one Saturday at the Dimond Center mall; Dec. 1 at Dimond High School; Dec. 3 at Northway Mall; and Dec. 5 at UAA Cuddy Center.
