U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents intercepted more than 40 kilograms of opium at the Anchorage international airport this week, the agency said Tuesday. The dope, worth some $16 million, was shipped from Thailand and was bound for Wisconsin, said Jerry McGee, chief CBP officer in Anchorage. Anchorage is one of the largest hubs for air cargo in the U.S. and international flights often stop here to refuel.
Agents found the opium after a routine X-ray at the FedEx hub detected an anomaly in some packages, which were then pulled for further inspection, he said. The opium was found stuffed into the bases of hollowed out wooden cat statuettes.
McGee said there have been no arrests in Anchorage, though the investigation was ongoing into who shipped the drugs from Thailand and who planned to accept the shipment in Wisconsin.
