A South-side Showdown between two wrestling teams that entered Wednesday night undefeated in Cook Inlet Conference dual meets turned on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which negated a potential tie and produced South's 31-30 win at Service.
Each team won seven matches, and each won in the same manner -- three pins, three decisions and one major decision.
A turning point came in the 215-pound division, where South's Nick Archuleta, ranked No. 3 in his weight class among 4A wrestlers, pinned Service's Andy Enz, ranked No. 2, late in the first round. An unsportsmanlike penalty issued against Enz docked Service a team point.
South, ranked No. 3 among large schools behind Colony and North Pole in rankings compiled by AKmat.org, improved to 7-0 in conference dual meets. Service is 6-1.
Ten of the 14 matches included at least one wrestler ranked among the top six in the state.
Among matches involving ranked wrestlers, Service's top-ranked 189-pounder, Stephen Ellis, earned an 8-6 decision against third-ranked Ross Morehouse; South heavyweight Dylon Short, ranked fifth, scored a 6-2 decision over sixth-ranked Jason Jeffords; South 145-pounder Luke Shelley, ranked second, racked a 22-11 major decision over fifth-ranked Nick Gordon; and South 112-pounder Johnny Hogenson topped sixth-ranked Conrad Lacey 4-1.
