Link: Alaska Dispatch Two-thirds of the households in Nunam Iqua, a village at the mouth of the Yukon River that has no grocery store, are already short of food this winter, according to an informal survey by community activist Ann Strongheart. As she did last winter, Strongheart is leading a drive for donations of food and cash to villagers, who have been hit hard by summer fishing restrictions and a November flood that damaged nets and boats. "I am far more concerned with making sure that people go to bed with full tummies and warm homes than with any issues or stigma of asking for help," Strongheart says. John Moller, rural adviser in the governor's office, says there's no "silver bullet" for rural economic troubles and that long-term solutions are being developed. In the short term, relief efforts will be developed on a community-by-community basis, he says.
