Freshman Nokelby heats up goal lamp

"A turkey sandwich, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, and I watched 'Bride Wars.' I guess that got me fired up," Nokelby said of her pregame prelude to a five-goal outburst against Bartlett-South.

Katie's older sister, junior captain Molly Nokelby, added a second-period score, Cayla Wiita had two goals and Jamie Rall and Alahna Stivers each added goals in Bartlett-South's 11-0 win over Chugiak-Eagle River in girls hockey at Ben Boeke Arena.

Nokelby scored a goal in the first period, two in the second and added two more in the third as Bartlett-South improved to 9-0. She had a hat trick on her resume before setting a new high in goals.

"Once I got the hat trick, I needed to go for more. I really wanted to get another one after that," said a grinning Nokelby. "Even after five I was going for another one, I was eager for six."

Although sisters Katie and Molly are "extremely competitive," Katie said, it is another teammate that Katie has been battling for the team scoring lead.

"Jamie Rall and I have a bit of a competition going," Nokelby said. "She's got a couple of four-goal games so we might pretty even right now."

Two of Nokelby's goals came on backhanders, something she has been working on.

"My backhand is not that good," Nokelby said. "I've been practicing on it, shooting at home. I'm surprised it worked."

All four of Bartlett-South's second-period goals had a Nokelby involved -- Katie scored the first and third goals of the period and assisted on a goal by Wiita. Molly Nokelby scored between her sister's tallies.

Chugiak Eagle-River was outshot 23-4. The team's goaltender Sierra Carr, made a couple of dazzling saves, including stopping a 2-on-0 break late in the first period, but Bartlett-South had too many offensive weapons to shut down.

Rall had three assists to go along with her goal. Brittany Stahl and Sara Lopez each chipped in a pair of assists.
