Link: CNN CNN is the latest national media outlet to send a crew to the Northwest Alaska village Shishmaref, perched precariously on a Chukchi Sea barrier island north of Nome and battered by storm surges made worse by permafrost thawing and autumn freeze-ups delayed by a warming climate. The news peg for CNN's piece is the United Nations Climate Change Conference opening next week in Copenhagen. "People in Shishmaref are aware that world leaders will meet next week ... to try to hammer out an international treaty on climate change," CNN writes. But many, if not most, residents are already resigned to the fact that any reduction in carbon emissions will come too late for them and they'll soon have to leave their village. The CNN article includes an extensive multimedia package.
