Troopers from St. Marys responded to the death in Alakanuk about 8:30 a.m. Nov. 7, troopers said.
An investigation revealed the mother, who was not named, had been drinking when she rolled onto the child. A troopers spokeswoman said she did not immediately have further details on the case, including the child's name and gender.
The death remains under investigation.
Alakanuk is a village of about 670 people near the mouth of the Yukon River. The village is a local-option community that outlawed possession of alcohol in 1990, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.
