ALAKANUK -- A 2-month-old infant was killed while sleeping after its mother rolled over and suffocated the child, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers from St. Marys responded to the death in Alakanuk about 8:30 a.m. Nov. 7, troopers said.

An investigation revealed the mother, who was not named, had been drinking when she rolled onto the child. A troopers spokeswoman said she did not immediately have further details on the case, including the child's name and gender.

The death remains under investigation.

Alakanuk is a village of about 670 people near the mouth of the Yukon River. The village is a local-option community that outlawed possession of alcohol in 1990, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.
