The Harpooners earned the right to defend their title Friday with a semifinal sweep of Newhalen, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19. Golovin advanced by sweeping Kwethlik 25-9, 25-21, 25-9.
Today's championship match will pit the two most successful programs in Mixed 6 volleyball, in which three boys and three girls must be on the floor for each team at all times. Point Hope has won four state titles, including three of the last four. Golovin is second with three.
"They're going to be gunning for us," said Point Hope coach Gary Lamar, who said he's expecting nothing less than a classic battle.
"We know they're very good," he said. "It's going to be a heck of a game."
