A poor fall chum run in the Yukon River has put an estimated 200 dogs in danger of starvation. Most of the dogs are in the 600-person village of Fort Yukon, about 130 miles northeast of Fairbanks.
An effort to get food to mushers in as many as seven Yukon Flats villages was set up by a coalition that includes Cold Spot Feeds and Second Chance League.
North Pole's 49er Feed has been taking donations and selling bags of food for Fort Yukon mushers at $7 to $10 less than retail.
Wright Air Service will transport the food for free.
